SUMMARY:Maine Irish Reads "Land" by Maggie O'Farrell
DESCRIPTION:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning\, bestselling author of Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait returns with a soaring historical novel set in Ireland in the years before and after the Great Hunger. \n“A breathtaking hymn to the sanctity of natural spaces\, operating on timescales both intimate and geological. I finished Land moved not only by the vivid lives of its human characters\, but the thrumming\, gorgeous presence of its mosses\, waters\, winds\, and skies.” —Daniel Mason\, author of North Woods \nOn a windswept peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic\, Tomás and his reluctant son\, Liam\, are working for the great Ordnance Survey project to map the whole of Ireland. The year is 1865\, and in a country not long since ravaged and emptied by the Great Hunger\, the task is not an easy one. Tomás\, however\, is determined that his maps will be a record of the disaster. \nThe British soldiers in charge are due to arrive any day\, expecting the work to be completed\, but Tomás is unexpectedly sent off course by an unsettling encounter in a copse. His life\, and the lives of those of his family\, will never be the same again. Liam is terrified by the sudden change in his taciturn father. What was it that caused such cracks to open in Tomás\, and how is Liam\, aged only ten\, going to finish the mapping and get them both home? \nLand is a novel about separation and reunion\, tragedy and recovery\, colonization and rebellion. It is a story of buried treasure\, overlapping lives\, ancient woodland\, persistent ghosts\, a particularly loyal dog\, and how\, when it comes to both land and history\, nothing ever goes away. As spellbinding and varied as the landscape that inspired it\, Land is\, above all\, a story of survival\, for our times and for all time. \nSee more Maine Irish Reads Events Here

SUMMARY:Maine Irish Song Project with CASTLEBAY
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 7th\, 2026\nAt the Maine Irish Heritage Center\nWorkshop: 4:00pm-6:00pm\nDinner: 6:00pm-7:00pm\nConcert: 7:30pm\, doors open at 7:00pm\nA CONCERT OF MAINE’S TRADITIONAL IRISH SONGS\nMaine’s premier Celtic folk duo Castlebay will present a concert of Maine’s traditional Irish songs at the Maine Irish Heritage Center in Portland on Saturday\, November 7th at 7:30pm The concert will include ballads and blarney gleaned from Maine’s vibrant Irish tradition accompanied with 12-string guitar\, Celtic harp\, fiddle and tin whistle. \nThis performance offers a rare opportunity to experience Maine’s Irish musical heritage in an intimate setting. With over three decades of touring throughout the U.S.\, Scotland\, England\, and Ireland\, and more than two dozen recordings\, Castlebay brings authenticity\, scholarship\, and artistry to every note! \nIn addition to the concert\, Castlebay will be offering an exclusive workshop\, and the opportunity to have dinner with the artists!\nGo deeper into the living tradition of Maine’s Irish songs with an intimate\, hands-on workshop led by Castlebay (Julia Lane & Fred Gosbee)\, Maine’s premier Celtic folk duo. Building on their concert performance\, this workshop will guide participants through the fascinating process of uncovering\, preserving\, and performing songs collected in Maine’s Irish communities during the early 20th century. \nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity to not only enjoy Maine’s traditional Irish songs but to actively engage with them. Whether you are a musician\, singer\, historian\, or simply curious about Maine’s cultural heritage\, you’ll come away with new insights into the stories\, humor\, and humanity woven into this potent musical legacy. We’d also love to encourage our workshop participants to bring and share their family songs! Whether it’s the lullaby your grandmother used to sing\, or something that’s been passed down for generations\, we’d love to hear it. \nIn the break between the workshop and concert\, the artists would love to invite workshop participants to join them for a communal dinner. This will be BYO food\, with light snacks and drinks available for purchase from the Center! \nAbout the Artists:\n Julia Lane & Fred Gosbee have been exploring and transcribing archives of music collected in Maine in the early 20th century. Collectors ranged throughout the state gathering hundreds of traditional songs many of which are from Ireland brought by the people emigrating and settling here and working on the coast\, in the woods\, farms and factories. Field recordings and journals document over 1000 songs from which the duo have selected and arranged music for performance. In addition to singing these versions of old Irish music\, Castlebay will share the lore and history of this potent musical legacy which embodies stories of romance and rogues\, shipwreck and survival as well as a good dose of humor and blarney. The duo has transcribed many of these songs\, “mending” them\, and publishing a series titled “Bygone Ballads of Maine”. Volume 1\, “Songs of Ships and Sailors” was presented by Loomis House Press in 2021 and is available in local bookstores as well as online. Castlebay has recorded two albums of these songs “Bound Away” and “The Maid on the Shore” which are available from their website. A subsequent volume and recording of Maine’s Irish songs is in process. \nFor over 30 years\, Castlebay has toured the eastern US\, Scotland\, England and Ireland being appreciated at arts centers\, folk clubs\, festivals\, schools and on radio and television. They have released over two dozen recordings and their music has been used on numerous video soundtracks. More information is available at their website www.castlebay.net.

With roots in the living Irish musical cultures of Boston\, New York City\, and Philadelphia\, and a tremendous admiration for the first generation of recorded Irish musicians\, the duo conjures up the sounds of the dance halls\, vaudeville theaters\, and house sessions central to Irish-American music from the first half of the twentieth century. In 2019\, the two recorded their debut album\, “The Glory Reel” alongside box player and piano accompanist Chris “Junior” Stevens\, which Dan Neely of the Irish Echo called “a fabulous album from three of Irish America’s finest.” During the pandemic years\, the two made “The Phonograph Project”\, a Patreon-supported series examining 78 recordings of traditional Irish music made in New York City in the 1920s and 30s. More recently\, they’ve made musical appearances at the St. Louis Tionól\, the Patrick J. Touhey Memorial Weekend in Boston and the Ward Archives “Archiving Irish America” conference in Milwaukee. SUMMARY:Maine Irish Reads "Bad Bridget: Crime\, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women" by Elaine Farrell & Leanne McCormick
DESCRIPTION:The untold stories of generations of Irish women who saw their American dream become a nightmare – and the trouble they got into as a result \nIreland in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was not a good place to be a woman. Among the wave of emigrants from Ireland to North America were many\, many young women who travelled on their own\, hoping for a better life. Some lived lives of quiet industry and piety. Others quickly found themselves in trouble – bad trouble\, and on an astonishing scale. ‘ \nElaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick\, creators of the celebrated ‘Bad Bridget’ podcast\, have unearthed a world in which Irish women actually outnumbered Irish men in prison\, in which you could get locked up for ‘stubbornness’\, and in which a serial killer called Lizzie Halliday was described by the New York Times as ‘the worst woman on earth’. They reveal the social forces that bred this mayhem and dysfunction\, through stories that are brilliantly strange\, sometimes funny\, and often moving. \nFrom sex workers and thieves to kidnappers and killers\, these Bridgets are young women who have gone from the frying pan of their impoverished homeland to the fire of vast North American cities. \nSee more Maine Irish Reads Events Here

SUMMARY:Casco Song & Ballad Circle
DESCRIPTION:Casco Song & Ballad Circle at the Maine Irish Heritage Center\nThe Casco Song & Ballad Circle will meet at the Maine Irish Heritage Center Library on the 4th Monday of every month from 7-9 PM to share traditional songs. Some participants sing ballads: stark\, spellbinding story-songs handed down orally as homespun entertainment. But traditional songs of any kind\, from any tradition\, in any language\, are welcome!  \nBring a couple of your favorite old songs\, ballads\, shanties\, seasonal songs\, pub songs\, or what have you—memorized or not—and share them with our friendly circle. Unaccompanied voices are the norm\, but you’re welcome to accompany your own song on an instrument if you choose. Or\, just come to listen and immerse yourself in the world of these tales and their tunes! If a song has a chorus to join in on\, we’ll learn it together by ear\, but solo songs are great\, too. This is a participatory event where everyone is welcome regardless of ability\, expertise\, or confidence. \nThese sessions are free to attend\, and a suggested donation of $5 per session will be gratefully accepted. All funds raised through donations will go straight back into MIHC programming! We ask that you RSVP before each session you expect to attend\, even if at the last minute.

See below for pricing. \nAbout the Band: Celtic American roots music from Maine’s Bold Coast\n \nBailey’s Mistake is a not-quite-traditional\, Celtic-inspired\, four-piece folk band from Maine. The group mixes traditional music from Ireland\, Scotland and Newfoundland with brand new songs about contemporary life in New England. Bailey’s Mistake’s pulsing sound is driven by bass\, drums and guitar and topped off with hearty vocal harmonies and thrilling bagpipe and whistle tunes. \nBailey’s Mistake is made up of four seasoned musicians who all went to the same rural high school in Maine — aptly named Bonny Eagle. Collectively\, they have about 110 years of touring musical experience. \nTroy R. Bennett plays guitar\, sings soulful lead and writes most of the band’s original songs. Travis Cote learned to play the bagpipes at 10 and thrills audiences with his rhythmic\, majestic sound. Dean Clegg is the band’s inventive percussionist and oversees all technical aspects of every show. Rob Babson plays bass\, sings delicate harmonies and is the band’s musical leader. \nBailey’s Mistake has played gigs all over New England. The band is also recording and releasing one new song\, every month\, throughout 2025. \nThe band takes its name from a legend told for generations along the Maine coast. Back in the 19th century\, there was a certain ship captain named Bailey. He was trying to guide his vessel safely around West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and into Lubec Harbor. Unfortunately\, it was a foggy night and he missed. Instead of safe harbor\, Bailey ran aground in a shallow\, rocky inlet just south of the lighthouse. \nBut rather than face the wrath of the ship’s furious owners in Boston\, Bailey and his crew unloaded the lumber they had on board\, built houses in the cove and settled down with several local ladies. \nTo this day\, on most good maps\, that little harbor is simply labeled “Bailey’s Mistake.” \nLearn more about Bailey’s Mistake: https://www.baileysmistakemusic.com/ \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nAbout the Opening Act: Jim Sharkey\nJim grew up in County Roscommon\, Ireland. His songs reflect the Irish tradition as well as singer-songwriter music he grew up listening to. Regarding his original compositions Sean Smith\, BostonIrish Contributor\, November 2024 writes “there’s such an innate gentleness to his music\, a care and concern expressed about our humanity\, on a large and small scale\, and that tenderness is once again abundant on his fourth album\, “Our Old Village”.   \nLearn more at https://www.jimsharkeymusic.com \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Maine Irish Reads "Poguemahone" by Patrick McCabe
DESCRIPTION:A swirling\, psychedelic\, bleakly funny fugue by the Booker-shortlisted author of The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto. \nUna Fogarty\, suffering from dementia in a seaside nursing home\, would be all alone without her brother Dan\, whose epic free-verse monologue tells their family story. Exile from Ireland and immigrant life in England. Their mother’s trials as a call girl. Young Una’s search for love in a seemingly haunted hippie squat\, and the two-timing Scottish stoner poet she’ll never get over. Now she sits outside in the sun as her memories unspool from Dan’s mouth and his own role in the tale grows ever stranger— and more sinister. \nA swirling\, psychedelic\, bleakly funny fugue\, Patrick McCabe’s epic reinvention of the verse novel combines Modernist fragmentation and Beat spontaneity with Irish folklore\, then douses it in whiskey and sets it on fire. Drinking song and punk libretto\, ancient as myth and wholly original\, Poguemahone is the devastating telling of one family’s history—and the forces\, seen and unseen\, that make their fate.

SUMMARY:Maine Irish Reads "Heart\, Be at Peace" by Donal Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Irish Book of the Year \nShortlisted for the Nero Novel of the Year \nFrom one of the most acclaimed Irish writers today\, a new novel about smalltown Ireland that explores a community on the mend and the power of love and trauma to both bring people together and divide them \n“I said it before. Madness comes circling around. Ten-year cycles\, as true as the sun will rise. . .” \nIn a small town in Ireland\, the local people have weathered the storm of economic collapse and now look to the future: The jobs are back\, the dramas of the past seemingly lulled\, and although the town bears the scars of its history\, new stories have begun to unfold. \nBut an insidious menace now creeps through back-alley shadows and into the lives of the townspeople. Old grudges fester and new ones arise. Young people are lured by the promise of fast money while the generation above them tries to hold back the tide of an enemy beyond their control. And the peace of this town is about to be shattered in an unimaginable way. \nA stunning\, lyrical novel told in twenty-one voices\, Heart\, Be at Peace reveals a community that together looks to overcome the betrayals\, secrets\, and grudges that can divide families\, neighbors\, and entire generations. \nSee more Maine Irish Reads Events Here
